End Credits #55: Cinema's 2016 Lost Treasures Peter Vaughan
These are some of Cinema's sad departures of 2016 taken from my personal notes soon after the events took place:
The grim reaper's bountiful 2016 harvest sadly continues:
One of our great character actors, Peter Vaughan, a most distinctive, commanding and accomplished British thespian of the stage, cinema and television, has died at age 93.
Vaughan's on-screen presence could, depending on the role, equally convince audiences of his benign benevolence or menacingly evil personality. His always vividly enacted characters appeared in 1960's Village of the Damned (his first on-screen credit), The Victors, Die Die My Darling, The Naked Runner, The Bofors Gun, A Twist of Sand, Alfred the Great, Straw Dogs, The Mackintosh Man, 11 Harrow House, Valentino, Zulu Dawn, The French Lieutenant's Woman, Time Bandits, The Razor's Edge (1984), Brazil, Mountains of the Moon, The Remains of the Day, The Crucible, The Legend of 1900 and The Life and Death of Peter Sellers among others.
He made a significant contribution to British television, giving outstanding performances as, for example, Mr. Jaggers in Great Expectations, Long John Silver in Treasure Island, and as Harry Grout in Porridge.
American audiences will probably most recognise him for his vivid portrayal of Maester Aemon in the HBO series Game of Thrones (2011 - 2015), his final performances. Peter Vaughan (April 4, 1923 - December 6, 2016) R.I.P.
