Serving Cinema's Tastiest Treats

Dish of the Day

Just some film musings of a more succinct, spontaneous and sometimes seditious nature:

Thursday, March 2, 2023

Today on TCM:

After directing Colorado Territory, Raoul Walsh’s very next film retained all of that film’s energy and even added some for White Heat, reviewed here. TCM's screen will heat up Thursday, March 2 at 10:15 am PST.

And later tonight:

Around the World in 80 Days (1956)

Despite an amazing star-studded cast, the participants in this so called “adventure” remain just that: everyone, interchangeable as they are, might as well be playing themselves, in situations so void of humour and peril it’s as if the filmmakers were afraid of displeasing anyone in their targeted wholesome family audience. The story, described pretty much in full by its title, is so light and airy, every concluding segment floats away from one’s memory like the film’s hot air balloon. We know, however, that after leaving each destination… “Hooray!” we must be getting closer to this interminable journey’s conclusion. The film’s two redeeming joys are Victor Young's music and Lionel Lindon’s eye catching cinematography in what is, more or less, an inflated travelogue. Without these aforementioned elements, watching this film would feel like it’s taking the title’s duration. Of course that didn’t stop a remake in 2004. Viewers who decide to take the trip can embark at TCM (updated) Sunday, March 10 (2024) at 5 pm PDT.
