Classic film screenings from around the world this September include:
Noir City will take place in Chicago, Illinois from September 4 - 10.
The introduction reads:
From September 4 - 10, NOIR CITY: Chicago will present ‘Face the Music!’, a 19-film program of crime and mystery films featuring... musicians! From early examples of Hollywood noir like Blues in the Night (1941) to jazz-fueled '60s gems like All Night Long (1962) and A Man Called Adam (1966), the movies feature genuine musical legends like Elvis Presley, Sammy Davis Jr., Hoagy Carmichael, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra, and Dexter Gordon performing alongside film noir favorites including Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Ida Lupino, Dan Duryea, Linda Darnell, and Rita Hayworth.
Screenings on September 4 - 6 will be hosted by Eddie Muller, Film Noir Foundation founder and host of TCM's Noir Alley.
Screenings on September 7 - 10 will be hosted by FNF board member Alan K. Rode, author of Michael Curtiz: A Life in Film.

In 1966, one of the more challenging films to face off against the Production Code (mentioned in Exploring the Artefacts #3: Code Breakers) was that year’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, reviewed here, remarkably delivering all of the guttural force of its theatrical origin while creating a more intimate, and cinema appropriate, dynamic all its own. Let the “games” begin Tuesday, September 8 at 12:45 pm PDT.
Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton
Umberto D. (1952) is a previous TCM recommendation here. Carlo Battisti provides a heart-wrenching portrayal of a Government pensioner in Rome as he desperately struggles to survive his impoverished circumstances. Director Vittorio De Sica's humanity will shine on Umberto and his endearing friends Wednesday, September 9 at 8:30 pm PDT.
There have been quite a few movies centred around boxing over the years from 1937’s Kid Galahad to 2018’s Creed II with plenty of standouts in-between such as 1947’s Body and Soul, 1956’s Somebody Up There Likes Me, 1962’s Requiem for a Heavyweight, 1972’s Fat City and 1980’s Raging Bull. None of these, however, get as straight to the punchline as 1949’s knockout noir The Set-Up, previously reviewed here and happening again Thursday, September 10 at 10 am PDT.
My next selection is Gold Diggers of 1933 reviewed here. The show must go on Friday, September 11 at 5 am PDT.
Ginger Rogers
One of the Top Ten: World Cinema Treasures is The Battle of Algiers a.k.a. La battaglia di Algeri (1966). The intensity of resolve and emotional dedication is so resolute on both sides of the conflict portrayed, it'll take a miracle for the invested viewer to fully recover after witnessing this stunning cinematic spectacle. The battle will commence Saturday, September 12 at (early morning) 2:15 am PDT.
Despite its ridiculously hard to follow plot, this film's wildly entertaining detective yarn is worth waking up for.

Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Louis Jean Heydt
Barbara Stanwyck stars as a devoted wife trying to save her husband (played by Barry Sullivan) but equally determined to match wits against killer Ralph Meeker in order to do so, in the previously recommended (here) noir, 1953's Jeopardy. This life or death struggle will commence in Eddie Muller’s Noir Alley Saturday, September 12 at 9 pm PDT and again on Sunday, September 13 at 7 am PDT.
