This weekend on TCM:
The more psychologically disturbing, (than monstrously horrifying) 1941 version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde has Spencer Tracy in the title role. This was previously critiqued here. The Dr. will begin his transformation Saturday, October 17 at 1 pm PDT.
I have more to say on Spencer Tracy’s performance, compared to a few others who have played the same part, in an article seen here.
MGM's 1952 musical Singin' in the Rain was not adapted from a theatrical production though the film was later turned into one being first presented on stage in 1983. Its abundant creativity, innovation and driving energy place this film at the top of all musicals ever produced. Singin' in the Rain has been reviewed here as a Blu-ray selection and will dance its way onto TCM Sunday, October 18 at 8:45 am PDT.

Also, I am highly distressed to discover so many movie stills and photos (including actors, directors, c.d. and blu-ray covers) automatically removed from this site without a warning or contact from anyone. This comes on the heels of The Cinema Cafe Facebook Chat Room (in existence for over a decade with well over 230k members) being shut down completely because of movie images, common to the internet, being posted. I believe it was an automated service that conducted the blitzkrieg on behalf of the studios: part of a recent crackdown on any and all internet sites using their stills… even though there is not only no financial incentive to be found here, they (the photos) can only serve to promote their product (DVDs, TCM showings etc) and develop further interest in classic cinema.

This next offering I would not necessarily recommend except perhaps for its Jerry Goldsmith score: The Swarm (1978) which has, along with its soundtrack, been briefly reviewed here.
